And thus arrived the mother of all Superhero movies. And what an arrival!!! Its dark, its gloomy, its dangerous and it makes your hair stand. It reinvents the villain in Cinema and pours an avalanche of well crafted sequences and performances your way. This was the most awaited movie of the year and it was worth all that wait.

Christopher Nolan directs this sequel of Batman Begins where Batman(Christian Bale) is pitched against the most malicious villains of all times- The Joker (played by Heath Ledger). The Villain who does not care about money but just want to see the world in chaos. There is no way you can scare him because he has nothing to loose. Then there isΒ Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) who is the district attorney and has a strained relation with Batman. He is Gotham city’s only hope as a hero with a face and Batman is banking on him so that he could live a normal life with his childhood sweetheart Rachel Dawes who is oscillating between the two men. In comes the Joker and everything turns topsy turvy.

The movie belongs to Heath Ledger. Never have a villain been so terrifying and so much filled with malevolence. Its been a long time since we have come across such a fine piece of villainy(read acting) and I can strongly smell an Oscar. Its rare when an actor takes over a movie with his sheer presence even though he is playing a villain. This was Heath Ledger’s last movie as he passed away in January 2008. Joker will always be remembered by this performance and whoever takes over the role in the next movie in the series will be having some pretty big shoes to fill in. Christian Bale is also good as the man torn between his duty and love(as all superheroes are) while Harvey has some very realistic graphics done on his face in the second half.

The movie boasts of some great action sequences although I didn’t like the one towards the end as it was too haphazard and hazy. In this movie Batman can be seen flying for the first time when he goes to HongKong to abduct Lau for the Gotham City police. That was one hell of an action sequence. The sequence in which Joker attacks the police vans carrying Harvey is also well executed and that is where the Batpod appears for the first time. Pretty neat vehicle. πŸ™‚ The Joker is in police custody near the interval and you think that its over but its just the lull before the storm. And yes, Harvey Two-Face also makes an appearance.

Do watch this movie as it is one of the best Superhero movie of recent times. Dark, full of turmoil and with fabulous performances. Watch it for Joker, the perfect Anti-Hero. Its nothing less than sheer delight.

I agree with you the movie was fucking awesome. I do not think that anyone needs to take over the role of the joker, even though they left it open. Sure there struggle is eternal but Batman has plenty of other villians that keep the franchise growning.

No doubt the movie is AWESOME and surely it has replaced IRONMAN from the top position of being the best in Superhero genre… And I do not see any movie will be able to topple its position in recent future… no matter any number of Hulks and Hellboys come and go… The most weird part is; the second best IRONMAN will be remembered for Robert Jr and third best SPIDERMAN for Tobey…both of them are heroes in the movie…but this movie would be remembered for Ledger… in the role of best villian ever created in Comic world… Another point is the entry of DC comics character on the top… till now Marvel has captured the top position with Spidey and Ironman this year… and DC have been quite a failure with Batman Begins and Superman Returns in recent years. But BATMAN is back and back with a bang… this movie is a legend… And for some body who is interested – DC released a DVD movie – BATMAN:GOTHAM KNIGHT, an animated collection 6 short movies directed by world’s 6 different best animation directors and japenese animators, on 11th July 2008. It is again a must watch for someone who is a die hard BATMAN fan. You would see his journey from beginner to THE DARK KNIGHT.

Mr Kant I don’t think that Spiderman will be at the third position after Iron Man as Spiderman is a much much better movie than IronMan and also as a character also Spiderman has more to him than IronMan. .. Spiderman gave a new dimension to superhero movies.. the dialogue – “With Great Power comes great Responsibility” is the best ever.. Although I haven’t seen Dark Knight and I am really looking forward to watch it coming weekend as I really Liked Batman Begins and if this one is better than the prequel .. ohh its gonna be thrilling .. absolutely thrilling..

    Good Review Mr. Sharma..

The review was kind of brilliant making me pretty sure that the movie is gonna rock… its all praises for Joker(Heath Ledger)for his gr8 performance as a villian. It is good that you chose this movie to watch/review and not any other :)…surely goona watch it soon…

Dude, you are the only reviewer who I’ve seen giving the movie a 4.5… everywhere its 5/5 or 10/10 reviews lol. I want to see this movie, along with Batty Begins. Maybe will have to wait until the DVD comes out. πŸ˜€

So you too found some action scenes hazy! Some were completely confusing! But overall yeah, agreed. Good movie!

@Crazyassdan : You bet it was. The role of Joker was left open and I am not sure that he was even caught in the end. He was just dangling by the ropes. But I am sure he will return. πŸ™‚
@Vijaya Bharat : The Batman movies which came earlier were nothing as compared to the last two. They are more realistic and dark. Do watch this one and Batman Begins.
@RXK : Yes, the most amazing part is that the movie will be remembered for Joker. And I guess you and SAM can carry on your fight about who is best – Ironman or Spiderman. Personally, I think Spidey will always be better. πŸ˜€
@Patrick : It broke some records all right. πŸ™‚ And I would definitely like to see the next one asap. πŸ˜‰
@Vinod : Yes, it would be great at IMAX, will the huge wide screen.
@Nikhil : So what are you waiting for? Move your ass. πŸ˜€
@SAM : “Why so serious?” Yes, I agree with you that Spidey was better than Ironman. And please do watch this one even if its difficult to arrange for company. πŸ˜‰
@Dhawal : Yes, I was planning to see Kismat Konnection but thankfully changed the idea. And, boy, am I glad. πŸ˜€
@Rajneesh : How do you know that our views match when you have not seen it yet? πŸ˜›
    @Abhishek : Well!!! Now you know. πŸ™‚
@Joel : Thanks. And do watch it.
@Allirekha : Ahem!! best movie of the century is taking it a little bit too far. πŸ˜› And do see it. πŸ™‚
@Reema : I don’t know why but I like Bale more than Keaton. He suits the role better. Michael Caine is also good as well as Morgan Freeman. I have seen Heath in Brokeback Mountain earlier. I was not able to recognize him in this movie at first. πŸ™‚
@Ashish : The emperor is never satisfied. πŸ˜› I think the final 15 minutes could have been a little better. That’s why a -0.5. Why don’t you see this one in a theatre?
@Nita : Yes, the final climax fight could have been better. I think there was too much camera movement. But I loved the movie. I am thinking of taking my parents too. πŸ™‚

I loved the movie. Heath Ledger was too good to be true. The way he’d wet his lips with his tongue. Amazing. He was true to the Joker’s character in the cartoon. Christian Bale looks really good as Batman, I have to admit. And Harvey Two Face! What brilliant face reconstruction was that! It was amazingness!

Do you remember that scene where Batman goes on his bike in front of that Freightliner in which Joker’s going? And Joker goes – Oh he missed and then the truck just topples over. What a scene!

The only thing that disappointed me was the Batmobile. That was sad. Too crude. The bike coming out of it was really cool and all but I wish the car were a little sleeker. They say they made it like that because it’s aerodynamic and those metal plates make a good armor but I’d still have preferred a sleek and nice looking car. That Lambhorgini in which he travels after the Batmobile blows up was much better.

Yes, it is truely thuperhero movie in the recent times. This movie set a new record in the the US box-office. Normally in the US we can definitely get tickets few minutes before the show. But this one is an exception! People are watching this movie like crazy. πŸ˜€ Kudos to Heath Ledger!!

    The emperor is never satisfied.
But then again, so are critics. πŸ˜›

I’ll have to spend Rs.200 traveling to and back from Mumbai if I want to see it in a theater. I hate hindi translations and thats how they’ll show here. πŸ™

  25. Amit July 24, 2008 at 11:23 pm - Reply

@Ish : I have read somewhere that Heath stayed alone in a hotel for a month to prepare himself for the role. I was actually not able to recognize him at first. And Christian actually looked like Batman. Perfect.
And that truck scene got a lot of Ooos and aahhhs in the theatre. Batmobile was the same as in the first part. Actually it was used much more in Batman Begins.
I even liked the scene when Joker blows up the hospital. He is just standing and checking his remote after blowing half of the hospital and then suddenly everything blows up.
@Manoj : yes, I am there. Trying very hard to be there. πŸ˜€ Yes, I heard about the mania in U.S. Some of my friends there were telling me. People are going crazy.
@Ashish : Ok. Hmmm..try the Hindi translations. You can laugh in such a serious movie then. I saw Star Wars in Hindi. It was the best comedies of our times. πŸ˜›
@Arvind : Watch and do tell how it was.
@Bikash : Hmmm…then go ahead and watch it. I am sure you will like it. πŸ™‚

I was reading your “Kya wo zindagi thi” poem.
Hey, really touching! πŸ™‚ I think poetry is mostlty (not always, ofcourse) inspired by some tragic loss. BTW did you ever listen to Raageshwari’s “Mere Mehboob Chal” song? Beautiful composition and lyrics. You Tube has it!

  27. Manoj July 25, 2008 at 12:16 am - Reply

I guess I was not able comment there about the poem..so I have commented here. Excuse me for the irrelevant comment πŸ™‚

  28. ish July 25, 2008 at 1:26 am - Reply

Yes, that scene where he blows up the hospital was nice too. Almost all the scenes that had the Joker were very interesting and nicely done. I didn’t know the Batmobile was the same, but still, it wasn’t exactly nice looking. I would’ve wanted a sleeker thing. But I have to admit, the bike coming out of the car was very nice. And the way Bale drove the bike was brilliant too.

  29. Amit July 26, 2008 at 9:30 am - Reply

@Manoj : Thanks for reading that poem. Umm..I don’t know if it came from a personal tragedy of some sort. There might be something inside me which came out. πŸ™‚ We were having a poetry competition last year at my friends birthday. I wrote it for that. Thanks very much for the comment. πŸ™‚
@Ish : I guess they were just trying to show the robustness of the vehicle. Also initially it was meant for military, so maybe thats why the same sort of look and feel.
Anyways, movie was Paisa wasool. Iss se jyada sochne ka hi nahi. πŸ™‚ I am thinking of taking my parents next week…
